There is truly no smell as amazing as fresh warm bread or rolls coming out of the oven! I remember coming home from school to the smell of freshly baked buns or bread, ready and waiting as the perfect after school snack! To this day when I smell fresh baking, I am immediately transported to that happy time and place of my childhood.

Fast forward to today with busy work schedules, running to kids activities and trying to simply keep up with life, it is difficult to put together a meal – let alone add on the extras!

This 30-Minute Dinner Roll recipe is wonderful because it is truly so easy to prepare, the buns take a short time to rise and the result is such a delicious treat that it is worth the extra effort! What a great side to enjoy with a hot and tasty bowl of soup or chili!

I love the convenience of buying dinner rolls from the store and the quality is very nice. In most cases however, store bought items have additives or preservatives in order to keep a longer shelf life. Making these homemade dinner rolls from scratch ensures that nothing is added except wholesome goodness! And these tasty little buns never last long enough to have to worry about shelf life!

If you are lucky enough to have any left over the next day, they do stay fresh and are so wonderful served with butter and jam in the morning! I love to enjoy this special treat with my morning coffee – it is comfort food at it’s best!

Our sense of smell is one of the most highly acute of all our senses and tends to influence our mood. It is no small wonder that when we smell freshly baked dinner rolls, it makes us feel happy and excited in anticipation of these tender, tasty treats!

  • Divide dough into 18 even pieces, and form into balls. Place in a greased pan and cover with parchment paper and a kitchen towel.
  • Let rise 10 minutes in a warm place. (You can allow them to rise up to an additional 30 minutes if time allows).
  • Lightly brush with milk and bake on the middle rack for 10-12 minutes or just until browned.

  1. These are so easy and fast, and so good! They aren’t as amazing the next day, but I have plenty of breads I can make that hold up well. This is the one I use for company to have fresh bread on the table with almost no effort or time. I love the flexibility on raise time, too. They do well with squeezing into the oven whenever I can, so it makes timing a meal easy.5 stars

    1. Hi Shelly, we have only made this recipe as listed. But since the milk is just brushed on top it should be fine. Other readers have used almond milk with great results.

  2. I wanted rolls for dinner but didn’t want to spend $5 for the tubes at the store. I found this recipe and tried it. Amazing! I won’t be buying the tubes of rolls ever again! This recipe was so quick and easy, and the rolls were soft and fluffy!
Do you think I can add honey to the dough to make honey rolls? If so, how much honey should I add.
Thank you for the great recipe!5 stars

    1. I have not tried adding honey, although I think it sounds delicious! If you try it I would love to hear how it turns out Kathie!

    1. I have never personally tried this recipe with a mix of whole wheat flour but other readers have had good results! We would love to hear how it turns out for you!

  3. I know I’ve already commented here on this recipe once before, but I needed to come back right quick and reiterate again just how AMAZING these dinner rolls are. They are SO SUPER easy and foolproof to make. I follow your recipe exactly, and they come out amazing every single dang time. They’re SO very light, airy and fluffy. That first bite, while they’re still warm fresh out of the oven is always like biting into a little slice of heaven here in earth. I just love them so much. Thanks again so much for sharing this recipe with us. Have a blessed day ☺️5 stars

    1. I am so happy to hear this recipe is such a hit for you! Thank you for sharing your kind words Jaime!

  4. I made these rolls last night. They were perfect. This recipe is very forgiving. Ii forgot to add the salt until I was already kneading. Added it then and kneaded for a little longer. Still turned out great. I will be making these more often.5 stars

  5. the recipe calls for yeast..which yeast do I use “active” or “instant”. don’t know the difference. is there an alternative to the milk before baking thanks

  6. Any and all dough need a good amount of rise time…..these comments that say this recipe/title are “incorrect” are wrong.
they do take 30 minutes to prep/cook. but, the longer you let them rise the better. I have done them in 30 minutes, 40, 1 hour. they always end up tasty and are a quick dinner roll recipe.
the people leaving ^^ these comments possibly need to research how bread/yeast/rise time works and maybe plan ahead accordingly 5 stars

  7. the best quick dinner rolls i have ever made. I was surprised at how quick they made up, Made them for thanksgiving everyone loved them so much that I did them for Christmas as well. Have shared the recipe with my family as anyone can do this recipe. Love them so light and fluffy.5 stars

  8. These were the perfect addition to our chicken dinner tonight!
They came together so quick- no mixer needed! I’m in Alberta at a high elevation and the amount of flour I used was 3.5 cups.
I didn’t have milk to brush on top, but they browned beautifully. These
Would be great hamburger buns in a pinch or just-because-buns.
Such a great recipe! :) thank you!5 stars

  9. These are definitely not 30 minute rolls. More like 1 hour and 15 minute rolls at best. That is still pretty fast for rolls, but don’t be fooled by the title because it’s totally incorrect. You will use double the yeast you normally would, but within the “30 minute” time frame, it’s a total waste. They tasted good but not amazing.2 stars

    1. The recipe title is defiantly correct, I made them in no time at all. After you make the rolls and get them in the pan you just let the rise while the oven heats and they bake up in the time stated.

      1. absolutely, like my comment says above.
people who cannot organize/plan accordingly love to complain about recipes that say they are quick.
you can prep these so quick and let them rise while the oven heats up or let them sit for a bit until exactly 12 minutes before you eat!5 stars
