Ingredients/Variations

SOUR CREAM Regular or low-fat sour cream will both work great! Try plain Greek yogurt for a tangier skinny version if that’s what you have.

MAYO A touch of mayo gives this dip a creamy flavor. It pairs perfectly with the sour cream and seasonings!

SEASONINGS Dried chives, garlic powder, onion powder, dill, and salt & pepper all add to the flavor of this dip!

Feel free to mix it up by adding chopped chilies, jalapenos, sun-dried tomatoes, or chopped spinach. Even bacon can give sour cream dip a whole new flavor profile!

It’s perfect as a chip dip or better yet, bagel chip dip! Serve with fresh veggies, or use for dipping hot roasted potatoes!

Make It in Advance!

Sour Cream Dip is best served cold when the flavors have blended. The dried spices/herbs rehydrate in the base so this dip is best made at least 30 minutes before serving.

Or, make it a day ahead so that it’s ready when you are!

How Long Does Sour Cream Dip Last?

Kept cold and covered, the dip should last up to 10 days in the refrigerator. No doubt it’ll be used up by then, right Before serving again, give it a thorough stir and add salt and pepper or extra seasoning to brighten up the flavors.

It’s not advisable to freeze sour cream dip because like most dairy products, once it thaws, it will become grainy.

  1. Super easy! Decided on a whim that I wanted dip now. This recipe popped up in my search, so I made it. It could not be any easier, yet is so good. That is even without waiting the recommended 30 minutes. This is a keeper.5 stars

  2. Good base but I thought it needed more pizazz so I added 1/2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce, a tbs of dried onion and 1/2 tsp of seasoned salt and pepper. Now we’re talking dip!4 stars

  3. This dip is amazing!! I am sorry I found it. Lol chips will not be the same without it.
I had to sub green onions for chives and tarragon for dill. Still came out perfect!5 stars

  4. I just made this a few minutes ago and it was so easy to make and delicious! This will now be my go-to quick dip for chips or even raw veggies that I like to eat. I’ve got other uses that I think I could make it work for too like putting it in a cold cut sandwich, I think that will be delicious and will try it tomorrow for lunch if I have any dip left, lol ☺️5 stars

  5. We made this recipe with Greek yogurt instead of sour cream (all out!) and it still turned out great! We weren’t sure how the seasonings would work, but just smelling the bowl it smelled like store bought sour cream chip dip. We enjoyed it so much, and will definitely come back to this recipe again!5 stars

  6. I had my toddler help make this for New Year’s Eve today! While a bit salty (his doing, not the recipe ) we both can’t stop sampling it!5 stars

      1. Never knew how easy it is to makes good dip! It’s delicious! I’ve now used this recipe three times! I used to search for dip mixes high and low in the grocery store that are labeled gluten free, because I have Celiac Disease. I can make my own now! Thank you! :)5 stars

  7. Today, DH comes home with a container of sour cream, announcing he is going to make some chip dip. Interesting, because I have never seen him make dip in 25 years. Lol. He then asks me where I keep the dry onion soup mix. Something I have never bought or used in all our time together! So I found this recipe and saved the day! It is very good and so easy to make! I used 1 tsp dried chives and added about ¼ tsp salt and a few turns of freshly ground pepper. Thanks for a great recipe!5 stars

  8. Hi,
I want to make this but was wondering if you use fresh dill or dried dill weed? Does it make a difference?

    Thanks! Love your posts!!

    1. Hi Sheri,
This recipe uses dried but if you have fresh, that would be great too! You’ll need about 1 1/2 teaspoons of fresh to replace 1/2 teaspoon of dried.
